Mass Distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets (LLINs) Project Overview
Malaria is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In 2022, the National Malaria Control Program reported 27,349,509 confirmed cases and 24,880 deaths. This means the DRC accounted for 12.3% of malaria cases and 11.6% of global malaria-related deaths, according to the World Health Organization.
To combat this disease, promoting Long-Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets (LLINs) is the key preventive measure that can reduce malaria cases by half and decrease malaria-related deaths by 20% when universal household coverage is achieved. Mass Distribution Campaigns (MDCs) can swiftly enhance accessibility to insecticide-treated nets, ensuring universal coverage and complementing ongoing distribution efforts.
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria is the primary financial supporter of MDCs in the DRC. Since 2018, IMA World Health has partnered with the national NGO SANRU to implement these distribution campaigns. Each campaign aims to significantly reduce malaria exposure for around 80% of households in the targeted provinces while promoting the use of LLINs for approximately 80% of households in the project provinces. During the third distribution funding cycle (2021 – 2024), IMA World Health launched extensive distribution campaigns across the provinces of Maniema, Kwilu, Mongala, Sud-Ubangi, Haut-Uélé, and Bas-Uele.
