IMA World Health's work at the intersection of GBV and HIV in DRC

The intersection of HIV and GBV is a critical public health and social issue. Studies have shown that individuals, particularly women, who are survivors of GBV are at a higher risk of contracting HIV. This is due to several factors including forced or coerced sexual activity, limited ability to negotiate safe sex practices, and the increased likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors as a result of trauma.

Conversely, HIV-positive individuals often face an increased risk of experiencing GBV. The stigma and discrimination associated with HIV can lead to emotional, physical, and sexual violence from partners, family members, or community members. This violence can exacerbate the health and psychological challenges faced by HIV survivors, creating a vicious cycle of abuse and health deterioration.

Addressing this interconnectedness requires comprehensive strategies that integrate HIV prevention and treatment with GBV prevention and response. This includes providing support services for survivors, educating communities to reduce stigma and discrimination, and implementing policies that protect the rights of individuals affected by both HIV and GBV. Collaborative efforts between health care providers, social services, and legal systems are essential to break this cycle.
